Galaxy Handicap Field

The Galaxy Handicap field has a limit of 14 starters plus four emergencies and is usually run at capacity.

Horses that run in the Galaxy Handicap field may have come via a number of lead-up races including the Group 2 Challenge Stakes that is held at Royal Randwick two weeks before the running of The Galaxy.

The Sebring Stakes was previously the key lead-up race to The Galaxy and produced a number of winners of the Group 1 event, but a change in the scheduling of the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival means that the Sebring Stakes is now run a week after The Galaxy Handicap.

Galaxy Handicap History

First run in 1972 the Galaxy Handicap has a long and interesting history.

The event was first run over six furlongs, the inaugural winner being Playbill.

When Australia converted to the metric system next season the race distance was changed to the current 1100-metres.

In 1980 the Galaxy Handicap became a Group 2 race before being elevated to its esteemed Group 1 status in 1984.

The Galaxy Handicap history is not without its controversy either. In 2010 mighty Victorian mare Ortensia, who would go on to win Group 1 races at home and overseas, was first over the line but was disqualified after a four month inquiry having failed a drug test.

Previously the Galaxy Handicap has been run at Randwick racecourse and held on Doncaster Handicap Day later in the carnival.

Galaxy Handicap Betting & Odds

A popular Sydney spring feature the Galaxy Handicap presents punters with an excellent betting opportunity.

Often Galaxy Handicap odds open at the online bookies a few weeks out from the race giving you a chance to lock in your early selections at generous futures prices.

As mentioned above watching for the performers in the Sebring Stakes on Golden Slipper Day can prove an excellent Galaxy Handicap betting guide.

Another good Galaxy Handicap tip is to consider the three-year-olds for your Win bets as three-year-olds have an excellent record in the race with six wins during the with 1990’s Schillaci (1992), Sublimate (1993), Jetball (1994), Gold Ace (1996), Accomplice (1997) and La Baraka (1998); and five wins during the 2000’s with Mistegic (2002), Snowland (2003), Spark Of Life (2004), Charge Forward (2005) and Nicconi (2009).

 Galaxy Handicap Form

Galaxy Handicap form is generally fairly tough to analyse as sprinter generally come from a variety of different form lines to contest the race. The Group 2 Challenge Stakes is now the key lead-up race to The Galaxy, but no horse has been able to complete the double in the last thirty years. Past winners of The Galaxy Handicap have come through races like the Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1100m), Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m), Group 1 Oakleigh Plate (1100m) and Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m), while Bel Sprinter won the 2013 edition of the race first-up.

Galaxy Handicap Winners

Many greats of the turf have raced their way into the Galaxy Handicap winners list including Charge Forward (2005), Gold Ace (1996), Schillaci (1992), Mr Tiz (1991) and Luskin Star (1978) who won the race as a three-year-old.

Only one horse has managed to win the Galaxy Handicap twice with Grey Receiver (1981 and 1982).

Vying for a third straight win Grey Receiver failed in 1983 running a distant eighth to Bronze Spirit on an unsuitably heavy track.
