2014 The Galaxy Handicap – Anatina To Make Group 1 Debut

March 27th, 2014

Talented filly Anatina will make her Group 1 debut in the 2014 The Galaxy Handicap (1100m) at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday and trainer Robert Smerdon is confident that she will perform well in the toughest test of her racing career to date.

Anatina stamped herself as a filly to watch with a narrow win in the Listed Cap D’Antibes Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on October 5 last year and finished her spring campaign with a win on a heavy track in the Magic Millions Ballarat Three-Year-Old Classic (1100m) on November 24.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock was rated an outside chance when she made her return to racing in the Listed MSS Security Stakes (1100m) at Flemington on March 8, but recorded an impressive victory after being given a gem of a ride by leading jockey Craig Williams.

Smerdon admits that the Anatina will face much stiffer competition in The Galaxy Handicap 2014 this weekend, but believes that three-year-old has the talent to be competitive in the Group 1 event.

“At the weights, given it is a quality handicap, we are not well served,” Smerdon said.

“To me her distance range is 1000 to 1100 and it is a manner of finding an opportunity for her at a higher level.

“It is going into the deep-end.

“There is a 1200 metre race coming up, but she showed here in the spring that she struggles beyond 1100.

“It is a matter of finding her a Group opportunity in that distance range and, whilst it is deep-ending her, a top four finish would be good for her CV.

“She has a lot of ability and she is lightly-raced, so we don’t know where she ends up.

“Maybe she is well-placed here instead of out of her depth, but she is disadvantaged at the weights.”

Smerdon is chasing his first victory at Group 1 level since he took out the 2012 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) with talented filly Mosheen and is hoping to turn around his fortunes in The Galaxy after missing the placings with Bomber Bill, who finished fourth in 2003 and fifth in 2005, and Let’s Get Physical who finished towards the tail of the field back in 1986.
